English Language Requirement for New Citizens in the United Kingdom
People applying to be naturalised as British citizens are required to possess "sufficient knowledge" of English, Scottish Gaelic, or Welsh. As most applications are from people who know English, the other two languages will not be covered in this page.
Applicants for naturalisation need Entry 3 knowledge of the English language. Generally speaking, this level is sufficient to allow people to follow straightforward spoken explanations and hold a conversation on a familiar topic.
There are many ways of proving that the applicant's English is equal to Entry 3 or above. The Home Office does not require people to take special assessments where there is another way of proving their knowledge of English. This is usually the case if you are a native speaker of English, or have a qualification which would have required a good English to be obtained.
If you think that you meet the ESOL Entry 3 standard, but you do not hold any certificate, then you should undergo an Initial Assessment in ESOL. As a qualified teacher, I can assess your level of English language and sign your forms if you prove you are at Entry 3 or above.
You will be charged for this assessment at my current rate - minimum charge is one hour. You will also need to show an official form of identification such as your passport or driving licence. If you do not prove to be at ESOL Entry 3 then I can suggest how you can improve your English. Private lessons can be the quickest way to improve your English.
